Bug-Out Bag Weight Checker

Every bug-out bag feels fine in the driveway. The only honest test is the scale, and the scale asks two questions: what does it weigh, and what is that for you? The working rule among people who carry packs for a living is that a load you can walk with all day, for days, sits somewhere under a fifth of your body weight — and the closer to a tenth, the better the walk. Tick what is actually in your bag. The weights are typical published figures for each item; if yours differ, the total still tells you the truth about the pattern.

Look at where the weight hides. Water is the heaviest line on the list and it is not close — two liters outweigh the knife, the fire kit, the headlamp, and the first aid kit combined. That is not an argument against carrying it. It is the argument for knowing where you will refill, because a route with water on it lets you carry half as much of it. The second hiding place is the pack itself: a heavy empty pack spends your weight budget before a single useful thing goes in it, which is why every bag in our bug-out bag comparison gets weighed empty, on the record.

Worked example: the items ticked to start are a typical three-day bag. At the starting body weight of 180 lb, the verdict above reads 20 lb — 11.1% of body weight — and 8.1 lb of that is food and water, the weight that is supposed to leave. Tick and untick to make it your own bag.

The starting bag reads 20 lb — 11.1% of body weight, squarely in the working range. Past 20%, most carriers start making roadside decisions.

Questions people ask

How much should a bug-out bag weigh? For most adults, somewhere between 15 and 35 pounds lands in the workable range — but the honest answer is the percentage, not the pounds. Under a tenth of your body weight is a load you can carry all day. Up to a fifth is workable for a fit walker over a few days. Past a fifth, most people start shedding gear by the roadside on day two, which is the worst possible way to choose what to keep.

What is the heaviest thing in a bug-out bag? Water, almost always — a liter weighs 2.2 pounds, and it is the one item you cannot compress, substitute, or do without. Food is second. Together they are also the only weight that leaves the bag as you go, which is why a bag that starts at the top of the range can still be a sound plan.

Is a heavier bag ever the right call? In winter, yes, knowingly. Cold-weather clothing and a warmer sleep system can add eight to ten pounds that are not optional. The rule does not change — the budget just gets spent on staying warm, and everything else on the list has to argue harder for its place.

Choosing the pack itself? Our Packs & Bags section covers how much bag a kit actually needs, and our bug-out bag comparison weighs every bag in it empty and loaded, the way this page weighs yours. If the bag isn’t packed yet, start one step earlier with the Gear-Ready Emergency Checklist — it works through what goes in, section by section, before the scale gets a vote.
